Breastfeeding: Adjusting Expectations

When you’re expecting your first, there are so many things that others will tell you will “just come naturally.” You’re the champion woman who made it through labor and delivery (and for some, even surgery), and you have just met your little one for the first time. Victory…and total sweetness!

And then the nurse comes in and says, “Well, now, it’s time to start breastfeeding. Let’s try it out.” I don’t know about any of you experienced moms out there, but for me, I hadn’t really thought too much beyond meeting my beautiful “Kid.” (That’s what we at IBF call my eldest, if you are new to these vlogs.) I was never truly comfortable talking about, or even thinking about, breastfeeding. That is until the nurse arrived in my room.

So, as Erin is anticipating the arrival of her “Dudes”, we both wanted to absolutely encourage you in this “little” endeavor of yours, that you are not alone! We are all on a steep learning curve, even with things that are “supposed to come naturally.”

Breastfeeding is great! It’s an awesome way to bond with your little one, to continue nurturing him after those 9 months, and the benefits to you and your baby are great! But please, please, please, do not beat yourself up if things don’t work out! We are all warrior moms…forever, whether or not we were able to breastfeed!
