Sleep Cues From Infants- PS…Do not Ignore

First off, let me (well, I know Erin would say the same) just say that I apologize fully for this sweater on the video. I swear it’s super cute in person, but egads! Not good on camera! Hilarious! Thanks for sticking with this video despite that! Oh, don’t worry! We give you more credit than that! We know you like us for who we are, and not what we wear! HEE!

Okay. Down to business. Untangling the knot of infant scheduling a little further. YEAH!

We are not going to lie. Scheduling is hard. Why? Because it means we are in control and have to take responsibility for what is going on in our baby’s life. Let that just soak in for a minute. Don’t you think it would be easier to let your baby dictate life to you and then you just respond? The answer is yes. Yes, it would be easier. However, it will ultimately lead to a life dictated by the child, and in the end, at least for both Erin and I, we would go crazy. Imagine what this looks like when he/she is 13 years old? Yeah, we know. SCARY!!

So, stick with scheduling! We promise it gets a little easier, even after the first year. My kids are still on a “schedule” at 6 and 9 years old. (Let me just clarify that Baby Girl would say, “MOM…I’m 6 and a half!!” Oh, smile…) Their schedule just includes school, and homework, and sports, and fun…but there is still an ebb and a flow to the day that makes their existence predictable. And the more predictable it is, the less worrisome their day is for them. Besides, there are enough things in the world for them to worry about rather than “I wonder what time I’m going to eat/sleep/play today?” I say this because sometimes you need to be reminded of the big picture of life, in order to persevere in the small picture of today.

Sleep cues. I love these, because they were the first thing I ignored when trying to “get” my babies on a schedule. Why? Because I ignore them when they happen to me. Let’s talk about yawning, eyes drooping even closing, inability to focus, the affect of a second-wind (that always leads to a bigger crash that takes longer to recover from). It’s all true for the human race because it’s called INSTINCTS! We all do the same thing…let me just say, you NEED to pay attention to these things in your infant! It will save you…particularly from the insanity of an over-tired, over-stimulated baby!

So watch as Erin and Rebecca take you through the basic sleep cues that you can expect to see in your adorable baby!
